Liz McGrath has announced that Tony Romer-Lee has been appointed CEO of The Collection by Liz McGrath, which includes The Cellars-Hohenort, The Marine, The Plettenberg and Beachyhead Villa.

Romer-Lee was previously GM of the One&Only Cape Town. Prior to that he was senior GM at Singita’s Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

McGrath says of the new appointment: “Over the last few years, our development has been such that it has been necessary for me to find a very special person to assist me in the day to day running and continued growth of my three hotels. I have searched long and hard to find the right person to fill the position of CEO, and am confident that I have found him in Tony Romer-Lee. I am also delighted to announce some exciting changes in the management structure of my hotels.”

After leading The Marine to new heights, Jo Massie has been appointed regional manager of The Marine and The Cellars-Hohenort, where she will now be based. Angie Swail will continue in her role as deputy GM.

Hamish Hofmeyr has been appointed resident manager at The Marine. Heather Inggs, who has been at The Marine for many years, has been appointed deputy manager. The Plettenberg continues under the management of Lisa Knight and Justin Mitchell.

McGrath adds: “It is well known how much I respect and admire the Relais & Chateaux Association. Therefore, I am sure you can imagine my pleasure at being able to welcome my fellow hoteliers from all over the world to Cape Town in November for the second annual congress in South Africa.

“In the interim, I will be travelling to Paris in September, where the Relais & Chateaux Maison is hosting a month-long Southern Africa promotion. I look forward to being an ambassador for our beautiful country at this event.”

The Big 5 Aquila Private Game Reserve near Cape Town has concluded a deal which will see all its daylight energy requirements provided by solar power. Aquila, established in 1998, offers locals and foreign guests the opportunity to view the Big 5 just two hours from Cape Town and this bold step is a natural progression in its commitment to responsible practices, for which Aquila is already widely recognised.

With the installation of a 60 kilowatt facility, the initial step in the development of a 50 megawatt plant, Aquila will be taking its commitment to environmentally friendly tourism to the next level. “With many hours of abundant sunshine in the beautiful Cape Karoo, Aquila is a perfect site for the use of solar energy. I am proud to have initiated what I believe to be the ultimate in responsible land usage and a fantastic platform for sustainable social upliftment, conservation and renewable energy projects in one of South Africa’s most impoverished towns – and during a national power crisis,” says Aquila owner, Searl Derman.

The 60 kW facility will be a Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) system, with panels that move to track the sun, a first for South Africa, and will be operational from September 1. The new solar panel facility will be housed at ARC (Aquila Rehabilitation & Conservation Centre) which is situated on a separate piece of land directly opposite the main entrance of the prestigious Aquila Private Game Reserve. Aquila has invested over R1 million building a large outdoor sanctuary, comprising of several one hectare fenced camps where the once-doomed canned lions happily live out the remainder of their lives.

The deal has been signed with Concentrix Solar, a leading German supplier of Concentrator Photovoltaic systems which has been active in South Africa since 2008. This is the company’s first power facility in the country. Between Aquila and Concentrix, there will also be a skills development programme to train over 200 local residents of Touws River in security, construction and maintenance of the solar plants. This will add to the ongoing skills development programmes already in place at Aquila in the construction, tourism and game-ranging fields.

Derman has been committed to the upliftment of Touws River ever since hearing about the withdrawal of the railway from the town in the 1980s. This left a massive unemployment of approximately 97% in a town of 9000 people. Derman has been recognised as a ‘Champion of the Poor’ by the press and featured on Carte Blanche and Focus for his award-winning social upliftment and conservation efforts, which have sustained the town. These include; a soup kitchen that has swapped food for litter and now supplies up to 12000 meals per month. And while cleaning the town up, the recycled litter is used to pay for the school teachers. Derman continues to support the old age home and helps develop the youth by sponsoring the town’s rugby, cricket and soccer teams. Furthermore, Derman has donated several thousand blankets over the past 10 years, providing at least one blanket to almost every person in the town.
